Eggs with brown spots

What can be done about Pigmentation (Age Spots)?

Besides wrinkles, age spots are probably the most readily visible sign of premature ageing. These age spots are areas of dark pigmentation on your skin. They are most apparent on your face, hands and décolletage.

They are primarily caused by excess exposure to the sun. It is important to have annual skin cancer checks with your doctor to be on the safe side. To keep them from getting worse it is also imperative that you protect your skin from the sun.

While no treatment can completely reverse years of sun damage, there are a few options available to you to minimise the appearance of age spots.

IPL Photorejuvenation. This treatment involves using certain wavelengths of light that are absorbed by the brown colouring of the age spots. The light causes the pigmentation to break down which is then eliminated by the body. This is one of the quickest and most effective methods for reducing the appearance of pigmentation.

Active Skin Care. Using active skin care can help reduce pigmentation production in the skin, even out skin tone and help to minimise the age spots. A vitamin C serum will help stop the production of pigmentation while evening out the skin tone. A pigment suppression serum can help fade existing dark spots. It is important to note that for these serums to be effective, they need to be used on a daily basis.

Did you know you can purchase Regenerate Refuel Vitamin C serum online?

Skin resurfacing peels. A series of light resurfacing peels can help reduce the appearance of dark spots. They remove the build up of dead skin cells, which can help to even out the skin tone. Lactic acid peels have been shown to break down pigmentation over 6 or more peels.

Even though Melbourne might not be the sunniest place in Australia, we still need to take care when out and about. If you have concerns about pigmentation, make an appointment to speak to one of our Facelove practitioners in Elwood.
